How to set up your Box, connect to it from your devices, use it day to day and keep it running.
Getting started
- Set up your BoxTake your Box from the shipping box to your first chat at http://box.local: plug it in, join its setup Wi-Fi, choose your password and connect it to your home Wi-Fi.
- Sign in and add devicesSign in to your Box at box.local with your password, and add another phone or laptop with your password or a 6-digit pairing code.
Connect
- Reach your Box from anywhere (Tailscale)Turn on Remote access so you can open your Box from your phone or laptop when you are away from home, with a padlock once secure access is on.
- Message your Box on SignalLink your Signal account to your Box, then message it from your phone through Note to Self, wherever you have internet.
- Message your Box on TelegramMake your own private Telegram bot, then let us switch it on in a short support session so you can chat with your Box from Telegram.
- Change Wi-Fi or move your BoxSwitch your Box to a different Wi-Fi network from Settings, and get it back online after you move it to a new home or a new router.
Use your Box
- Chat with your BoxA tour of the chat screen at box.local: starting a conversation, the message box and its buttons, your conversation list, the left menu and the Settings menu.
- Choose and download modelsPick which AI model your Box uses for chat, turn image understanding and thinking on or off, download new models we have approved, and free up storage.
- Performance: one person or severalChoose whether your Box gives one person a very long conversation or lets more people chat at the same time, and what happens when you switch.
- Add people in your householdGive someone in your home their own private assistant on your Box, with its own memory, that they message from their own phone over Signal.
- Give someone their own chat profileSet up a profile on the chat screen at box.local for someone in your home, with their own conversation list and their own folder, then switch to it on their phone or computer.
- Talk to your Box (voice)Speak instead of typing, and hear replies read aloud in your Box's own voice. Voice works at your Box's secure Tailscale address.
Keep it running
- Update your BoxSee which software version your Box is running, check for updates, choose when to install one, and set how your Box checks for updates.
- Back up and restoreSave your Box's settings, conversations and memory to an encrypted backup file, keep nightly copies on a USB drive, and bring everything back from a backup.
- Change your passwordChange the password you use to sign in to your Box, and what to do if you have forgotten it.
- Factory resetErase your Box and return it to the state it shipped in: what a factory reset deletes, what it keeps, how to start it, and how to set the Box up again afterwards.
