The case for paying once
Most AI is rented by the month, and the deal can change without you. Here is what it means to buy it once, and what that costs you.
Each AI bill can seem small. The real trouble is who is in charge of it. Someone else says what you get for your money. When they change it, you find out from a message on your screen.
There is another way. You pay once, and the box is yours.
Rent or own
When you pay for AI each month, you don't own anything. You pay to use it. The company makes the rules, and it can change them.
We learned this the hard way. In spring 2026, the AI plan we used every day began to give us less. Our work had not changed. The plan had. That is a big part of why we built The Box. [1]
Claude is an AI made by a company called Anthropic. The rules are on its price page. Claude's paid plans for one person start at $20 a month. Your limits start over every five hours, and paid plans add a cap for each week. The page says the company may limit you in other ways too, "at our discretion." That means whenever it wants to. It says this is so all people get a fair share. [2]
That is fair. But it is still their call, not yours.
The rules keep moving
- June 2025: Cursor changed its $20 plan. Cursor is an AI tool for code. It used to give 500 fast answers, then as many slow ones as you liked. Then it gave $20 worth of use. Some people did not know they would pay extra past that, and got surprise bills. The head of the company said sorry and offered money back. [3]
- July 2025: Claude Code cut back with no word first. Claude Code is Claude's tool for code. People who used it a lot seemed to be hit the most. [4] Two weeks later, Anthropic said it would add a cap for each week to its Pro and Max plans. It began a month after that. [5]
- May 2026: Anthropic gave Claude Code more room. It gave twice as much room on some limits. [7]
- June 2026: GitHub Copilot changed how it counts. Copilot is also an AI tool for code. It used to count how many times you asked. Now it counts how much text the AI reads and writes. The price stayed the same. What you get for it changed. [6]
- September 2026: some of that went away. A short boost to the Claude Code cap for each week stopped on September 13. The new cap is still more than before the boost. But it is 17% less than what people had the day before. [8]
Limits went down, then up, then partly down again. You don't pick which way. You just find out.
What people told us
We have talked with many people who want AI at home and at work. When cost came up, it was not often about how big the bill was. It was about who sets the rules.
On calls, we hear the same things again and again. Bills every month that make someone angry. A price that keeps going up and down. A wish to pay once, up front, and be done. [9]
Someone on our waitlist was trying to learn to code by making mistakes. They kept running into limits. We also read this: "I don't want limits on what I can ask." [10]
They are not asking for a sale price. They want to own what they use every day.
What it means to pay once
The Box is one thing you buy. One price pays for the computer, getting it ready, and our help. [11] After that:
- No meter is running. Nothing on the box bills you by use or cuts you off. Ask it ten questions or ten thousand. Let an agent run a task every hour, all night. (An agent is an AI helper that does jobs for you.)
- The only limits on how much you use it come from the machine. It can only run AI up to a certain size. It can only help a few people or agents at the same time. The 64 GB box helps two. The 128 GB box helps four. Each one can keep a very long chat in mind. It may not be as fast as you'd like. [12]
- There is no plan to pay each month. The box keeps running the way it came to you. It works with no internet. It works if you never pay us again. [13]
- No one can raise your price or quietly give you less. No one can move you to a new plan or give you less without a word. An update can change things, but you choose if you want it. [13]
So if you want AI with no meter running, The Box is for you. It just won't be endless in speed or size.
What it costs you (the honest part)
This way isn't for everyone. Here is what you take on.
You pay a lot at once. You'll find the price on our home page. We sell in the US only, and we ship for free. You pay tax at the end. More room to store files costs extra. [14] A plan you pay each month spreads the cost out. This does not.
Pick your memory with care. It is fixed to the board, so you can't add more after. Memory sets how big an AI the box can run. People often measure AI size in "parameters." The 64 GB box runs AI up to 40 billion parameters. The 128 GB box runs AI up to 120 billion. [12]
It needs power. It stays on, and it needs the most power when it works hard. That cost is on your power bill, not ours. We have not checked how much it needs on most days yet, so we won't guess.
Every machine gets old. New AI that anyone can get and run keeps coming out. Some will be too big for the box you buy today. When we have an update we have checked, we offer it, and you choose if you want it. We can't promise when updates will come. [15] If you skip them, the box keeps running. But links to outside apps can break over time. A box that is far behind may also stop getting safety fixes. [16]
Our help has an end date. For at least two weeks, we help you set up and learn the box. For 12 months, we help fix trouble with the box for free. For both, you book a time with us. After the setup help ends, help that goes past fixing trouble is up to us, and it may cost money. That is unless your bill from us says something else. The warranty (our promise to fix the machine) lasts one year. It is for the machine itself, not the programs on it. [11] [17]
It's a big step. You can send The Box back in the 30 days after you get it. We keep 15% of the price on every return, because we set up each box before it ships. You also pay to ship it back. [17]
It won't take the place of every AI you use. Some people who bought one moved only some of their work to the box. They move the work they'd rather keep private, or would rather own. The rest can stay on cloud AI. That is AI that runs on a company's machines far away. [18]
If this list makes the price feel wrong, a plan you pay each month may suit you better for now. That's a fair choice.
The short answer
When you own your AI, you pay once. The box sits on your desk. It does what you ask, as often as you ask.
We built The Box for people who would rather own. If that's you, look at the price. If the boxes we have now are sold out, join the waitlist. We'll tell you when the next one is ready.
